How Did the Flying Wedge Football Formation Work?

rugby ball vs football

The flying wedge was a big deal in American football during the early twentieth century. This was the most commonly used offensive formation. In fact, it was the most common offense during the 1905 season. While this tactic was effective, it also caused a lot of injuries.

A flying wedge is simply a formation in which several players run straight ahead. They hold each other up, allowing the ball carrier to run past them, thus making it impossible for defenders to reach the ball. It is said that half a ton of humanity can crash through the center of the line, but this is not always the case. Today, a variant of the wedge can still be used. Some teams sew handles into the pants for blockers.

The Flying Wedge is an innovative formation that Lorin F.Deland, Harvard's football coach, created in 1892. For a while, Harvard's version featured two smaller V's of five players each, but a more modern variant was made by the Princeton Tigers. Because of its many deaths and injuries, the Flying Wedge was soon banned from gridiron play in 1905 despite its popularity.

While there is no way to prove the injuries or deaths of the flying wedge, it is certain that many players were killed. According to some estimates, 22 players died from the flying wedge in 1905. Another 19 people were also hurt. Most of the injuries sustained were to the neck and head. Although the Flying Wedge didn't make any significant changes, it did inspire many rule modifications that are still in force today.

One of most prominent rules changes was introduction of forward passes. This allowed the offensive side to run directly into the goal, which was not permitted previously. There were often problems with mass momentum formations throughout this period. This was solved by the formation of the Playing Rules Oversight Panel. After World War II, the NCAA hired a full-time professional leadership to oversee the sport's rules.

It is very complex system. That is what is most important to remember. It was even more complicated because the committee had to find a way of approving rule changes that were compatible across the board. This led to the formation of several rule committees. Some of these committees have continued to operate to this day. Other rule committees were charged with finding the best way for the winners to be rewarded. There have been many instances where rule changes were challenged and reversed. Hopefully this can be avoided in coming years.

The Flying Wedge was a great football innovation, but it was only one of the many interesting things that occurred on the field in the early twentieth century. This feat would have been impossible if it weren't for the existing rules and regulations. It has been copied widely in other sports.
