How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping, also known as free-fall parachute, is a sport that involves participants leaping from fixed objects (usually cliffs), like bridges, towers or buildings without any equipment. The participant uses their parachute safely to land from the object. It's similar to skydiving but you don’t have to wear a parachute or hold your breath as you wait to open it.

A wingsuit is the most common type base jumper. A wingsuit is made of two pieces of fabric sewn together. The chest, arms and legs are covered by one piece and the legs by the other. The boots are specially designed to allow the jumper stand upright during flight. During descent, the jumper pulls the straps attached to his/her feet tight, which causes the material covering the legs to bunch up, creating a large pocket of air underneath the jumper's body. The jumper can open his/her parachute if the air pocket is large enough and land safely.

Base jumpers may use powered suits to propel themselves faster through the air. Two main components of powered suits are a backpack with batteries and a pack that can be worn underneath the jumper's clothing. These packs contain small rockets that shoot jets of hot gas at high speeds. This creates thrust, which propels the jumper forward. These suits can be noisy and heavy.

BASE jumping can be a dangerous sport. It is important to understand the risks involved in BASE jumping before you attempt to learn. You can fall off a height, get hit head-on or upside-down, or collide and injure another jumper. Although BASE jumping isn't always dangerous, it can prove very dangerous if done incorrectly. To avoid injury, check out the following safety tips before attempting to BASE jump.

First, practice safe BASE jumping techniques by practicing on a smaller hill. You should always take a few minutes to get comfortable with the terrain before jumping off a larger one. You should also be alert for weather conditions. Make sure the wind doesn't blow in your face when you jump. Foggy skies should be avoided. If your vision is less than 10ft in front of you, you may need a break until the clouds clear. The third thing you should do is make sure that you have all the gear. Make sure you have a helmet, goggles, gloves, and a full suit with a harness. Fourth, you should have a plan. In case something goes wrong, you should ask another person to come along with you. Don't jump alone. Always have someone with you.
